During our trip to Cozumel, we took a ferry to Play del Carmen to meet a tour group heading to Chichén Itzá. If you’re staying on Cozumel, it might be worth booking your Chichén Itzá tour at your resort. That way, they’ll arrange a tour that leaves Playa del Carmen a bit later. Nearly all the tours we could find on Viator left at either 7:00am or 7:30am. We found one that left at 7:40. The ferry takes about 45 minutes, and the first ferry leaving Cozumel is at 6:30am. Since it was going to be a tight window, and we’d have to leave our hotel at 6:00am to make the ferry, we decided to get a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Playa del Carmen, and take the ferry over the evening before.
Playa del Carmen has quite a few resorts. If exploring the peninsula is your most important goal, it’s probably better to stay in Playa del Carmen than Cozumel. You can do a day trip to Cozumel for good snorkeling or diving. If you are staying on Cozumel, and you come to Playa del Carmen to catch a tour to Chichén Itzá (which you really should do…it’a amazing), it’s going to be a very full/long day, so don’t expect to do or see much in Playa del Carmen. If you want to spend a day exploring the area, you might want to check out the Xcaret Park, which is a water park with all sorts of adventures.
